Description | Programme: Effective Philanthropy, Fashion - Materials. Description: The recent monsoon rains and floods have incurred human and livestock casualties, damages to infrastructure and economy and posed serious threat to food security. A recent appraisal by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has found that 33 million people have been directly affected by the floods across 72 districts, i.e. almost half the country. Thousands of families are displaced and shelter-less in Balochistan, Sindh, parts of Punjab and Swat. There is an acute shortage of food, clean drinking water, tents and medicine in the flood affected areas. Approximately a quarter of a million households have been destroyed and more than half a million livestock, which are a major source of livelihood for local communities, have perished. Nearly 3.6 million acres of cropland have been destroyed. Considering the seriousness of the situation, WWF-Pakistan raised an appeal for donations to play its role in relief and rehabilitation of the vulnerable communities. Our Proposed ResponseWaters are still inundating Pakistan and things are going to get worse unfortunately. Even once they have receded, communities will have no alternatives to sustain themselves or their families in the absence of arable lands. What we are suggesting here is the tip of the iceberg and are activities we are already undertaking and need to extend and where we know quick action can save lives. There is a long list of relief and rehabilitation activities which are needed to carry out in the affected areas, however, WWF-Pakistan is looking to consolidate funds for phased approach and provide relief and rehabilitation/reconstruction across the target regions. Phase 1: Support for Staff & Detailed Damage AssessmentPhase 2: Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Efforts for local communitiesThe activities under phase 2 include but not limited to the following,•Identifying and financing alternative livelihoods (possibly cash-for-work, cash disbursements or similar modalities•Restoration of Shelters, farming lands and water resources•Distribution of agricultural inputs for the next seasons crops•Provision of WASH items and mechanisms from the water-borne diseases•Restoration of forests destroyed |
